Movement & Form

Why

A movement can give shape to different physical forms. This project explores how that can happen, working with three words in mind: hard, light, and dynamic. The final models are a result of where the linguistic adjectives and the tangible medium meet.

What

This was an exercise in craft and creating forms that inspire a certain motion. Along the way, I created many clay and foam models that explored scale and interaction. I later moved on to a new interactive medium consisting of rubber band and wood, which allowed me to create unique structural movements. Then, I refined the structure into final foam models purely focused on form. They lose the functionality, but aren't constrained by the requirement to function, and therefore capture the form of my movement to the fullest extent.

How

For prototyping, I used air dry clay and high density foam. For my final models, I used a mix of high density foam, plaster/spackling, and sanding to achieve a more refined finish. The wood and rubber models are built using balsa wood and commercially available rubber bands. The wood was then constructed with wood glue and cut to size using a hand saw.
